Bedford racer Joe Tandy sealed
victory in the second Formula Palmer Audi race of the weekend at
Italian Grand Prix circuit Monza in dramatic style by pulling off
an astonishing move on the final corner of the race.
Tandy led from pole position before being outdone by Spanish first
race winner Emilio de Villota at Lesmo 1 on the penultimate lap.
But Tandy’s last-gasp move all the way around the outside of the
Parabolica curve just allowed him to get the nose of his car over
the finish line first.
Not only was the move described by FPA founder and ex-Grand Prix
driver Jonathan Palmer as “possibly the most scintillating move in
the history of FPA” but it also produced the closest finish in
FPA’s eight-year history – a mere 0.084s separated Tandy and De
Villota at the chequered flag.
David Epton was in a safe third place but made a rare error.
Believing that the race had ended when there was still one lap to
go, he slowed allowing Stuart Prior and Viktor Jensen past him on
the final tour.
